The Demographics of Unemployment

Bob Herbert’s recent column in the New York Times has some fascinating observations.  While the unemployment numbers are staggering, it appears that the job loss has been concentrated among young men.  Check out these statistics:

  • Nearly 80% of the jobs lost during the current recession were jobs held by men.  This has left the unemployment rate for males at 10.0%, while only 7.2% of women are unemployed.
  • Moreover, almost 50% of the jobs lost were held by workers under the age of 30.

Here is Bob Herbert’s piece, “No Recovery in Sight”.

Something needs to be done to get people back to work.
