Congress passed the much anticipated bill (HR 3548) to extend unemployment benefits today (11/5/09). Here is a brief overview:
- The bill is referred to as the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009 (HR 3548)
- 14 weeks of benefits to people who have exhausted all of their regular unemployment benefits, in addition to EUC and EB.
- An additional 6 weeks (for a total of 20 weeks) of benefits to people who live in a state with an unemployment rate above 8.5%.
- President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law tomorrow.
- The bill will help the nearly 2 million people who have already had their benefits expire.
- The overall cost of the new program is $2.4 billion, and will be funded by a payroll tax on employers.
