Here are some interesting facts from the Department of Labor

  • 14.5 million: The number of people in the United States who are unemployed

  • 9.4%: The overall unemployment rate (defined as the percentage of the civilian labor force age 16+ who are unemployed)

  • 19.2%: The unemployment rate for construction workers

  • 3.1%: The unemployment rate for government workers

  • 345,000: The number of jobs lost in May 2009

  • 22.5 weeks: For those unemployed, the average number of weeks out of work

  • 33.1 hours: The average length of a workweek across the country

    The unemployment numbers for June are even more dire, even for government workers!
