As unemployment benefits expire, many people are aksing about a “Tier 5″ extension.
Background
If implemented, a Tier 5 would add additional weeks of unemployment benefits. To date, the previous extensions passed by Congress this year have only extended eligibility for existing tiers, enabling you to receive up to a maximum of 99 weeks in most states. The 2010 extensions have not added any additional weeks to the total available.

Tier 5 Extension – New Proposal Introduced
Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow introduced new legislation during the first week of August that formally brings the Tier 5 discussion in front of Congress. Here are the highlights of the propsal:
- The bill would add an additional 20 weeks of benefits for people who have had their benefits expire.
- The proposal would require that the unemployment rate in your state must at least 7.5% in order to qualify.
- Also included in the proposal are tax breaks for business owners who hire
- The new legislation has not yet been voted upon.
What’s Next?
- Members of Congress are on recess through September 12th.
- The Senate will next address the proposal upon their return in September.

It’s horrible to hear these stories and also being in the 99 group. I’m facing car repossession and the loss of my condo in a few days. What sucks is the US Government is doing exactly what is designed in the plan to create a larger gap between the rich and those now classified in poverty. Additionally they expect the demographic class reducing to poverty to die due to illness from no heath insurance or suicide from deep depression. And of those that survive, our youth will have the government designed failing school system to help them in life. SAD can not even describe their hands off approach to their version of a “It Isn’t Your US Govt’s Fault” planned Genocide of Americans. All we can do is watch in disbelief as it continues to get worse… compounded with government controlled media telling us the same sugar coated news stories deflecting from the true reality of the plan and it’s effects in America. Some will dismiss this as crap but it’s hard to avoid what you’ve just read if your eyes and ears stopped for a minute to form an opinion based on facts around each & everyone of us.
how many senators besides the michigan senator pushing for tier 5?
i don’t have answers? out of unemployment 2 weeks ago
and feel employers only want certain ages, certains kinds of applicants,
me not being one of them
wondering what to do?
if they dont wants give us extention give us jobs
or the fact that michelle obama can go to paris or france and book 60 rooms at over 200 k for personal business and our pockets are paying the security and all the other staff.and we can’t get extended benefits..my oh my
From Dick Nixon (took us off the gold standard), to Ronald Reagan (lowering taxes on the wealthiest Americans), to GHWB, to Bill Clinton (NAFTA) and GWB (too many stupid policies to list here), those elected to high public office to represent the People Of The United States have done everything but….The reason this country is in critical condition is becase of the domestic and foreign policies of this government since 1968. Now, the millions of people who are out of work for nearly two years have, according to the brilliant minds in Washington, DC, collected enough unemployment. In the meantime, ZERO meaningful jobs have opened up. The nations largest employers will not hire, and small business either can’t hire or have shut their doors. There’s no point in looking to the future because there is NO HOPE NOW. But history is behind the US Citizen.
What we the people (employed or not) MUST do is rattle the walls of the representatives who have destroyed millions of lives…and are willing to let it continue.
Posters on this board complain that they and millions more Americans have not been included in the uemployment figures; they’re right. A woman described these people as “invisible.” Again, an accurate representaion. THE INVISIBLE MUST STAND THE F UP AND BE COUNTED. The only thing these criminals in DC understand (besides perks and $$$), is people getting out into the streets to state their case. We shortened the “police action” in Vietnam, and now we MUST march in the streets again—I mean hundreds of thousands men and women everywhere across the country MUST BE COUNTED. Not once, not twice, but until the white collar criminals in the federal government give the men, women and child what they need to survive. Give the people what they need to survive until they’ve fixed what they’ve broken.
One more issue: if these creeps are friggin adverse to deficit spending, why are they receiving their salaries? Oh wait, they work so effen hard for the people they supposedly represent. Silly me to ask that question.

To all those who are out of work:
Don’t you get it! Our elected officials don’t care.
You would be wise to replace all now in power with someone new when election time nears.
Be smart! Get rid of those elected democrats and republicans who said no for extended unemployment benefits and tier 5 benefits.
I am a Vietnam veteran and broke.
What I can’t figure out is why in the world is there a limit on which states get the extensions?? People are unemployed in all states. MN does not have 99 weeks of benefits, we have 86 weeks. There are a lot of unemployed people that aren’t being counted in the numbers because they no longer are receiving benefits, can’t find work and have become the invisible. I applied for a job that had over 400 applicants!!! Another one had 280!! And those are just the ones that told me then numbers, what about all the other jobs I have applied for?? OH..get this, I was told by one that it came down to 2 of us, guess who got it, the other and WHY?? because that person had been unemployed longer than I!! We had the same level of experience, but the thing I was told that I had going for me was my length of experience; so I even had more than the person they had hired. Because of that I believe that the person they hired was also younger; I am almost 50. Unemployment benefits shouldn’t be based on the states numbers, it should be equally available for ALL Americans!!!!!!!!!!
But who really cares if over four million Americans are going homeless just as long as Michelle Obama can keep giving everyone lectures on what foods to eat, then I quess nothing else really matters!!
I’ve been out of work a year this past Feb.. exhausted all tiers and state extensions. My husband was lucky to get a job a year ago at, of all places a hatchery, he’s an electrician. We both were hit at different times, both in construction in the mtn. I went back to school a year ago, as obama had suggested, but now stuck, no unemployment, no job, no chance of a job and a little more equity to use to get by. I’m changing fields as obama suggested and now really needing the help just to get through. No jobs in the mtns., even fast food will not hire me. My age is 53, have been in the construction fd., no experience in fast food, retail, so I guess I’m a risk. I sometimes think they believe, when the economy does bounce back and there are construction jobs, I would quit and go back to what I know, just a thought. I have tried getting jobs even cleaning cabins, hotel rooms, I even tried to sit with the elderly, but again no experience and not on my resume as past employment. So I try to get through school, waiting on the next extention, hoping not to lose a house we built and give it away. For the first time in my life, receiving food stamps and help with our heating bill once a year. To think that our country just sent billions to this last flood area, for all the money given to big businesses, is a little disheartening. I’m in a state, Georgia, where unemployment is high, but the numbers are not correct, how are they counting me, I can even call in and let them know, I’m still looking, so I don’t even count anymore in the % of unemployed. So here I sit, worried, in disbelief, and telling my kids, we do live in the best country, but they shake their heads and say how, when they cann’t see or help you?
Well Barack Hussein Obama is on what, his 8th vacation this year? The Senate is on their 7 week vacation until September 13th!! Why the extra week this year anyways!!
And OVER FOUR MILLION AMERICANS are going HOMELESS!! They have run out of the 4th tier extension starting back in either February or March (depending on what State a person lives in), they cannot find a job (over 8 million jobs have been lost in this country since December 2007), and they have exhausted any savings that they may have had.
What a complete disgrace. Come November vote for anyone that is not now in office. Everyone in office now must get their “pink slip”!!
And next presidential vote, Barack will be out!!
This is the most disgraceful Senate in the history of the US!!
Fuck You Del……. You Republican Rotten Bastard you
and George Bush and all Filthy Republicans are responsible for all that has happened in his 8 year
term……… GO TO HELL: M. F.
WE ARE A DYING NATION!!!!
the american people who are out of work did not ask for this. it is a shame that the congres people have jobs and money and they dont care about the ones that dont. but you can bet if this was there children or grand children they would be passing the bil. they ned to pass a tier 5 so all of these people do not have to be home less
All of this is so sad. I have lost sleep over this situation. I stay up until 3am looking for a job and applying with no response from anyone. I am sure I am not the only one. So many people are going to loose their homes, cars and there lives. The jobs are scares so we depend on you our leaders to help us through this difficult time. At least I feel discourged by your actions I feel that I am put on the back burner I am not important enough maybe if I were a pothole I would be noticed. I have worked all my life and not working is depressing where willmy next meal come from, will I still have a roof over my head, will I be warm/cool and most of all will I survive. Tier 5 will help everyone in need please to prograstinate we are human beings as well this is not our way of life.
Don’t feel like your the only one! There are are 100′s of thousands of us in the the same boat. I know that’s of little consolation at 3 a.m. when you can’t sleep because you don’t know how your going to pay your rent, I know because I do the same thing. Good Luck and God Bless!
Man this is a shame.People it is so much harder for me to find work, you have to take things off of your resume to make it look like your entry level.Companys don’t want you if you have to much,Break your resume down and make yourself look like you never done it before and see what happen’s..
I been unemployed since 2008, looking for job and can’t find anything, dontknow how am I going to continue paying my rent and utility bills and the congress now in recess, in the meantime how are we supposse to support ourselves without an extention of benefits?
My wife and I are both unemployed and have run out of all options. We have borrowed from family until we can borrow no more. They have to worry about their own house and cars and bills. We are 3 months behind in mortgage and have tried to get Salvation Army to help and they are so backed up, that they said it will be at least another week or two till they can get to us. We have hooked up with a food bank and will be using them for the first time. Bad thing is, we worry about our pets. We will not give them up to the pound or leave them behind like other people have. They will be with us to where ever we go. We have had yard sales until we have no more to sell. We had family/friends donate stuff to sell so we could try and pay utilties and get some food to feed us and our pets. It’s a crying shame that the United States Government have ignored their own to go on a vacation when others are suffering thru no fault of their own.
can you send me your address so that i can send you a ck im in the same boat but my husband has a good job . thank god…
I just cannot beleive our Government left us for DEAD….. They bail other countries out , and the Banks and the Car Industries …. And the banks they bailed out are forclosing our homes and not giving loans to the people trying to buy and bail out the seller…and the Auto Industries are threatening to take our cars without payment in one month or less then we will have no resources if there were ever a job to have we couldn’t even get there!!!!!!!!!!! THE GOVERNMENT IS KILLING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE…. THEY ARE TAKING OUR HOMES AND FOOD RIGHT OUT OF OURS AND THE MOUTHS OF OUR CHILDREN
One thing we as American Tax payers and voters can do . . is let our government officials know that we longer approve of their ‘perks and benefits’ programs. Look up what a member of Congress gets for short time services and tell them we can no longer support them. Many of us when we did work did not get, receive or enjoy the same benefits. There use to be a time when working for the government or being a memeber meant something now it’s full of a bunch of lawyers. Pay attention… look at what they get . . everybody needs to tighten their belt. R.
Although I have been out of work since June 08′ I am far freoom lazy and not looking. In the NY NJ Metro area employers seek to hire young adults for less pay and no benefits, calling some independent contractors so taxes are not deducted nor contributed. I have applied for over 3000 jobs and received only 1 call back. To be America many jobs are for the fluent in english & spanish only. I understand the loop hole of America has not declared english as its official language . . but I can do the job . . and no one is aswering. I see in the ads that jobs are moving . . do you want me to move? With the 99er’s etc., out of cash . . joining the ‘home less’ isn’t that far away. I would take the job for less pay . . and become as immirgrant workers do . . . the over worked and under paid. Welcome to America, Americans.
We need Tier 5 and jobs. I have sent many emails on the internet and to employment agencies with no luck. I like many others have am living in fear. We desperately need an extension and Congress is ignoring us. It is very sad.
I hope that tier 5 gets passed. I have been out of work for over a year. I have had no luck as of yet. But, people need to eat and survive. What has this country come to when people right here at home need food and the basic nesscities. And every one in congress sit on their butts and points thier fingers at others. When they need to see what they are doing.
I understand how each of you feels, my benefits exhausted beginning Feb 2010. Since that time I was evicted and lived in a friend garage with my two kids, but was not able to continue to live there because it was a violation according to the HOA, I must have sent out at least 5000 resumes and had 10 interviews since Feb 2010 and no job offers. I love my country and my father died serving this country, and he believed in it, and taught me to beleive in it, and I love American, but not allowing Tier V for us is wicked and our henders don’t care if we live or die. I hope this is an eye opener for election, the Republican party must GO!
I’m sorry for those of us, like yourself Denver, that were so affected by this economy and have loss so much. I don’t know how these politicians can allow children to go through this to see our country in such a bad light. They set a poor example showing themselves to be liars and cheaters. The future of this country depends on honest leaders. I’m sure they have it easy while American people are beaten up by their greediness for their own agendas. I agree with you that Tier 5 should be enacted at once. We’re fighting for it. I believe in our country too and none of these politicians can destroy that. Our family members died for this country for the American people to live and thrive. Sometimes I think people like Glen Beck are really against all American people. He calls 99ers anti-American yet look at the backgrounds we come from. We hold the history of true blooded American people. Then again anyone who would not see it in their hearts to set aside their own selfishness for power and sees how the country is suffering is no good. Tier 5 is a tool for us to get back on our feet. I was able to get training in a new skill after fighting for 1 solid year while they turned me down over and over again. Their game playing made me tired and exhausted, but I still would not give up. Everything good will come back again. This is America they can’t get us down because we get right back up. God Bless
My unemployment ran out in March 2010. I have sold my second vehicle (1997 truck) and reduced my insurance to the minimum by law. I pawned everything that had value, cashed in any college fund I had for my kids and am now about to lose my house after 19 years of payments.
The United States government allowed free trade with China and since 2003 the jobs have steadily left the USA and European countries. We as hard working individuals especially those of us over 50 have nothing but unemployment to live on. My wife died 2 years ago and I have 3 young daughters.
The small amount of unemployment that I used to get barely pays my mortgage. Here are some more consequences of having no income.
1ST Sooner or later you will lose your house- If you lived in a nice nieghborhood (or wherever) your house will be sold at a price way below market value. Therefore the class of people moving in will lower the value of your house and the few working people will lose thier investment value.
2ND People like me can no longer afford car insurance so if we have a car accident You working people will have to pay the additional rates for the uninsured.
3RD When you can no longer feed your children you will have to start stealing just to feed your children. Who will pay for the jails and court systems. Working People
It is by far cheaper to help families who have worked all thier lives and whose jobs the government sent to China, Taiwan, India, Japan, etc
Pass tier five so at least we can live for 4 more months.
i agree. sept is too late to vote on tier 5. what makes me mad is that we give millions of dollars everyday to other people, but we the areican people cant even get help for what we are to lose. its wrong. we nedd to stop helping everyone else and help us. you know if we go where there at they would not help us like we help them. stop i dont want to live on th e streets.
On September first my family will be living on the street. Tier five would have been nice but it will come too late if it comes at all. How did this happen? We worked all our lives, paid our bills but none of that mattered. I will never vote for a Republican again no matter who they get to run for office. They not only did this to us but then did all they could to deny us help and then had the nerve to blame everything on us. I have heard people call them a lot of things but the one thing they certainly are is evil.
Ronnie I am not sure if it was ‘republicans’ . . I am still out to lunch that the ‘wheels’ in charge truly messed up . . and 9 11 was their fault. Someone was suppose to put up . . and we the people are the cost.
Period. This Tier 5 needs to pass us americans need the help jobs are are little kids need to eat and keep there homes.
