Unemployment Extension Update – March 31st, 2010
Legislation Update
- Although an additional extension was widely expected, Congress did not pass an extension for eligibility before their March recess. Republicans and Democrats were not able to agree on how to fund an extension.
- Eligibility for additional tiers will expire on April 5th. This means that if your current tier expires, you will not be able to receive additional tiers until a new extension passes.
The Good News
- This has happened before. Back in February Congress did not pass an extension before expiration.
- There was a 1 – 2 week period where people at the end of their current tier were not eligible for the next tier of benefits.
- Lawmakers then passed a bill on March 4th that extended eligibility for an additional 30 days.
- People who were ineligible during the lapse received retroactive payments for these missed weeks.
- Congress will be back in session April 12th, and Democrats intend to make the unemployment extension their first order of business.
- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that the bill they pass will be retroactive, similar to the March extension.
