Unemployment Eligibility Extended

Legislation Update

  • On April 15th, the President signed into law the Continuing Extension Act of 2010 .
  • This bill extends eligibility for additional tiers of unemployment benefits through June 2, 2010.

More Details

  • The payments will be retroactive.
  • This applies if you have recently exhausted a tier of unemployment benefits, and were not able to receive the next tier because of expiration. You should receive a catch-up payment for the 2 -3 weeks if your eligibility had lapsed.
  • In addition, the bill extends the $25 weekly payment increase put in place by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Additional Weeks

  • Unfortunately, the new legislation does not add an additional tier of benefits, meaning that the maximum number of weeks available (in most states) is still 99 weeks.
  • Certain members of Congress are discussing the potential for an additional 13 weeks of benefits, but this is in the very early stages.
  • We will keep you updated as new information on this issue becomes available.

  • My husband is a tier 5 unemployment recipient, he is at the end and neither he nor I have been able to find work. What are we to do? We run out of money… we have no place to live, nothing to eat, and there is no help in site! Are they going to allow him to collect the rest of his EU benefits? I don’t quite understand how all that works, but I know we need work or an extension!

Any idea when they will begin sending checks out?
